Comforter Cleaning: Wash or Dry Clean, and What It Costs

LaundryLocal cleans comforters per item: $45 for a queen comforter and $55 for a queen down comforter in NYC. Whether a comforter should be washed or dry cleaned depends on its care label. A comforter tucked into your wash & fold bag is billed as one oversized item instead of by weight.

What it costs, by size and fill

We list a queen comforter and a queen down comforter price for each area; see the table above or the comforter price page. If you send a comforter inside your regular laundry bag, it is billed as one oversized item ($15 in NYC, $12 on Long Island) on top of the bag weight, so you don’t pay per pound for a heavy item.

Wash or dry clean? The label decides

Under the FTC Care Labeling Rule, most textile products sold in the US must carry care instructions, in words or in the ASTM symbol system. If the label says machine wash, it can be washed; if it says dry clean, it should be dry cleaned. Follow the label, and if there isn’t one, tell us when you book so we can treat it conservatively.

Why big comforters are hard at home

A comforter needs room to move in the drum to wash and dry evenly. In a small washer it can come out with soap left in it or stay damp in the middle. That is the main reason people send bulky bedding out.

Down that dries fully

Down needs a long, thorough dry so the clusters don’t clump. That’s why very large down items can take a day longer than regular wash & fold.

How fast bulky items come back

Usually on the same promised turnaround as wash & fold: 24–48 hours in NYC and 48–72 hours on Long Island and in Westchester, with large down items sometimes a day longer. Schedule a pickup.
